No barbell?
Pick a different track.
You choose your equipment when you join, and you can switch it later if your gym access changes. Every track runs the same 31 days, the same leaderboard and the same 6pm live — just with movements that match what you actually have.
Bodyweight
Beginner · no equipment — just floor space. Air squats, tempo work and single-leg movements build the month instead of a loaded bar.
Kettlebell / Dumbbell
Intermediate · one KB or DB — goblet squats, front-rack squats and single-leg work, scored off effort since there's no 1RM to build a max from.
Standard Barbell
Intermediate · barbell, rack, plates (or a Smith machine) — back, front and box squats, run off a training max, building toward the Halloween attempt.
Advanced Barbell
Advanced · barbell, rack, plates, a light band — the full squat toolbox: high-bar, low-bar, front, Anderson, box and banded speed box squats.
Why this one finishes
You've started a
31-day challenge
before. You quit
on day nine.
Not because you're soft. Because most of them put a barbell on your back 31 times in a row and call it a plan.
Squat-tober is built the other way. Every track — bodyweight, kettlebell/dumbbell, or barbell — builds in real recovery: flush days, stretch-only days, or plain rest, depending which one you pick. They keep your streak alive while your legs recover.
Volume drops every week while the load climbs toward one max attempt. That is why you can squat daily and still PR on Halloween.
6 flush days
Bodyweight only. You still log a squat, keep your streak and score the day. Your legs get a break.
A daily effort cap
Every day names an effort ceiling before you touch the bar. Hit the cap and the set is over, even if reps are left.
A bad-day plan
Slept badly? Score under 5 on the check-in and the app swaps in an easier version of that day. No guessing.
Real percentages
Every weight comes off a training max: 90% of your best single, set on day one. That 10% is your safety margin.
The board
The strongest person
does not win this.
A board ranked on pounds is decided on day one by whoever is already strongest. So strength is the smallest of the three pillars here. It scores percent gained from your own starting max, not the number on the bar. Adding 15 lb to a 135 squat beats adding 20 lb to a 500.
the table
How the board reads · an example day 24
ExampleRanked on points. Ties go to whoever logged more days, then who joined first. Your own line always shows.
Consistency
35 points a day for logging the session, doing the mobility flow, checking in, joining the live and posting. That's 64% of all the points.
Staying in it
Streak bonuses at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. 150 for a perfect month. And 15 points for coming back after a miss.

Halfway through and the bar still moves like it did in week one. First month I haven't hated squatting.
+10 pts · Day 17Flush day. Sixty seconds in the hole, a twenty minute walk, and my hips finally feel good again.
+10 pts · Day 18Missed two days to a work trip and got the comeback bonus for showing up again. Small thing. Kept me in it.

The whole month,

Shown here: the Standard/Advanced Barbell shape — 25 loaded days and 6 bodyweight flush days, two of them tests (day one and Halloween). The Bodyweight and KB/DB tracks follow the same weekly rhythm with their own movements and recovery days — see the 4 tracks above. Tap a week to see how it's built. The sets, percentages and effort caps unlock October 1.

What is Squat-tober?
Squat-tober is a 31-day squat challenge from Modern Protocol that runs October 1 to October 31, 2026. You pick one of 4 equipment tracks — bodyweight, kettlebell/dumbbell, standard barbell or advanced barbell — and squat every day on it, with built-in recovery days worked in throughout the month. You set a starting number on day one and take a new max attempt on Halloween. A leaderboard, a nightly 6pm live room and a community wall run alongside it. It costs $27 for the month.
When does Squat-tober 2026 start?
Day one unlocks at 12:00am on October 1, 2026, Phoenix time, for everyone at once. The month ends with the max attempt on October 31. Until day one drops, the program stays locked and you can hold your spot.
How much does Squat-tober cost?
$27 today if you claim your spot before October 1. That covers the whole challenge, the leaderboard, the 6pm live room and every other Modern Protocol program. It renews at $9.99 a month on November 1, and you can cancel any time.
I'm already a Modern Protocol member. Do I pay for Squat-tober?
Yes — a one-time $17 enrollment fee on top of your $9.99 membership. The $27 spot on this page includes a month of app access, so as a member you have already paid for that half and you pay the $17 difference. The challenge costs the same either way. If you would rather sit October out, do nothing: your $9.99 continues, you keep every other program, and you are not charged the fee.
Do I really squat every single day?
Yes, but not every day is loaded. On the barbell tracks, six of the 31 days are bodyweight-only flush days — air squats, a deep squat hold, a mobility flow and an easy walk — plus four stretch-only days, and volume on the loaded days drops every week as the weight climbs. The bodyweight track builds its recovery in differently: ten plain rest days with no forced light squatting. Every track includes a pre-squat mobility prep before each session.
What if I miss a day?
You keep going, and the app gives you 15 points for coming back. One missed day is the reason most people quit a 31-day challenge, so the comeback bonus exists to kill that feeling. You can still finish top ten after missing several days.
How strong do I need to be for Squat-tober?
You need a squat you can do safely and a starting number to work from — the track you pick sets the bar. The Bodyweight track is built for beginners and needs no barbell experience at all. If you have squatted with a barbell regularly for six months and know what a hard set feels like, Standard or Advanced Barbell is the right track.
What equipment do I need?
Whatever you've got — pick the track that matches it when you join. No equipment at all works on the Bodyweight track. One kettlebell or dumbbell covers the KB/DB track. A barbell, rack and plates (or a Smith machine) covers Standard Barbell. Advanced Barbell adds a light band on top of that. You can switch tracks later if your access changes.
Why is the program locked until October 1?
Because everyone starting the same day is what makes the leaderboard, the wall and the 6pm live worth anything. Day one drops at midnight Phoenix time for everyone at once.
Do I have to be on the leaderboard?
No. Opt out in one tap and train the month privately. That hides you from the wall too, so it is one privacy choice, not two. The program is identical either way.
What happens on November 1?
Your subscription continues at $9.99 a month and the whole library stays open: every other Modern Protocol program, the exercise library and the recipes. Your Halloween max is saved to your PR vault as the new number everything else runs off. Cancel any time.
